How to use these CVC worksheets
CVC words are three-letter words a child can sound out: consonant, vowel, consonant — *c-a-t, cat*. Do one page a day, five to ten minutes, sitting next to your child, and go in order: the pages start with short *a* and end with all five vowels mixed.
- **Word builders:** say each sound, then slide them together to read the word
- **Reading pages:** blend the sounds and read each word aloud
- **Word families:** words that end the same, like *hat, mat, sat*
- **Word hunt:** find and circle every word with the vowel of the day
- **Mixed reading:** all five vowels together, once each one is easy
- **Activities:** match the picture, color the word, fill in the missing letter
Before you start
Your child is ready for these pages when they know the sounds of most letters — not only their names. If *m* makes them say /m/, they are ready. If not, a few more weeks of letter sounds will make CVC words much easier.
Tips for blending
- Say sounds without an extra "uh": /m/, not "muh"; /t/, not "tuh". *Cuh-a-tuh* does not sound like *cat*.
- Tap one finger for each sound, then sweep your hand under the word and say it smoothly.
- Stay with one vowel until those words are easy before mixing them.
- Change one letter at a time — *cat, hat, hot, hop* — so your child looks at every letter.
