How to use these sight word worksheets
Do one page a day, about five minutes, sitting next to your child. Every page has the same six steps, so after two or three days your child knows what to do and can do most of it alone:
- **Read it**: say the word together and point to it
- **Spell it**: name each letter, then copy one letter in each box
- **Trace it**: start at the green dot and trace the dotted words
- **Write it**: write the word on your own, on the lines
- **Find it**: color every bubble with the word — and not its look-alikes
- **Read the sentence**: read it together and circle the word
Which words are on these pages
Ten of the words children meet most in their first books: *a, and, can, I, in, it, said, see, the, you*. They all come from the Dolch pre-primer list, the set of high-frequency words most US kindergarten programs use. Some can be sounded out, like *can* and *it*; others, like *said* and *the*, have a part that does not sound the way it looks and are learned by heart.
Look-alikes on purpose
In the Find it bubbles, each word sits among words that look almost the same: *the* among *they* and *then*, *and* among *an*. Telling them apart is what reading a word "at a glance" really means, so let your child take their time and check each letter.
Tips that help a word stick
- Two or three new words a week is plenty for most kindergarteners.
- Go back to yesterday's word for ten seconds before starting a new page.
- Hunt for the day's word in a picture book at bedtime.
- Stop while it is still fun. Five good minutes beat twenty tired ones.
US Letter or A4
The download comes in both sizes: US Letter for the United States and Canada, A4 for the UK, Europe, Australia and most other countries. The pages print well in black and white.
